Minimum wage calculators for every state and DC

The work location starts the comparison. These 51 links lead directly to the jurisdiction’s wage rules and real calculator. A residence, employer headquarters or mailing address cannot replace the place where the work occurs.

Confirm the employment category

These directory figures describe an ordinary starting branch as of October 5, 2026. Local boundaries, employer-size tests, tipped duties, occupation-specific schedules and exemptions can change the result. Open the workplace page, choose the applicable dated category and retain its source with your calculation.

The calculator asks for hours on a seven-day time card because different overtime rules need different facts. California uses seven workdays, Colorado can require consecutive periods, Massachusetts reconciles tips shift by shift and New York separates occupations. A weekly sum alone cannot resolve every state’s premium requirements.

How to compare minimum wages across states

Use the same work date, job, hours, weeks and tip treatment for both locations. Annual pay repeats one weekly schedule rather than combining enacted rate changes across a year, and monthly amounts are averages, not the exact pay on any monthly statement. A statewide headline rate can also miss a city ordinance, an employer-size condition or a different overtime rule, so pick both workplaces from the list above and compare their calculators.

Use the workplace jurisdiction

For an ordinary covered job in Seattle, Washington’s statewide figure does not replace Seattle’s local floor, and unincorporated King County has another schedule with size and revenue categories. The actual work address matters; a postal city name can differ from the jurisdiction. Washington’s local options and official map source.

Oregon distinguishes the Portland metro boundary, standard counties and nonurban counties. The Eugene, Bend, Corvallis and Salem examples on its page connect a city to its county classification. Oregon region selection.

Match the effective date

For ordinary covered Florida work, the state floor moved from $14 to $15 on September 30, 2026; comparing a September 29 figure with another state’s October rate would mix dates. Alaska and Oregon also have midyear rate schedules. Florida dates · Alaska dates.

A future rate already enacted into law is still a future rate. Virginia’s $13.75 begins January 1, 2027; its 2026 ordinary floor is $12.77. Virginia’s enacted schedule.

Check which employer and job are covered

West Virginia’s ordinary state minimum depends on the six-worker permanent-location test, and Ohio’s state minimum includes a gross-receipts threshold. A worker outside one state provision can still have federal protection. West Virginia coverage · Ohio coverage.

Likewise, Wyoming’s $5.15 statute is not a general alternative to the $7.25 federal minimum; its calculator requires explicit confirmation before using state-only coverage. Wyoming scenarios.

Compare employer cash and tips separately

A tipped cash floor is only one part of the calculation. Wisconsin’s ordinary eligible cash floor is $2.33, Pennsylvania’s is $2.83, and Washington requires its full applicable cash minimum before tips. The employee’s eligibility and retained tips decide whether a credit and a shortfall adjustment apply. Wisconsin · Pennsylvania · Washington.

Do not compare cash-only amounts with another state’s wages-plus-tips total. Use the same tip assumption for both, remembering that actual tips are not guaranteed.

Use the same worked schedule

Four ten-hour days and five eight-hour days both total 40 hours, but daily-overtime rules can give different results. California’s ordinary calculator takes workday inputs, and Minnesota asks whether the state or federal weekly overtime threshold applies. California daily calculation · Minnesota overtime coverage.

A wage comparison alone does not establish affordability. Taxes, benefits, housing, transport and available hours need separate evidence; this site compares gross wage scenarios without inventing state living-cost estimates. For the hourly-to-annual arithmetic behind each result, see the worked examples on the home calculator.

For an indexed amount not independently reconciled here, the dated form asks for the exact official published minimum and, where necessary, eligible tipped cash. A hypothetical inflation percentage cannot substitute for the administering authority’s amount. Read the source directory and calculation method before interpreting a result as an actual paycheck.
