Rhode Island Minimum Wage Calculator
Rhode Island’s ordinary minimum is $16 per hour in 2026, rising to $17 on January 1, 2027. Eligible tipped cash remains $3.89. Covered retail Sunday and holiday work can require premium pay even when the week stays below 40 hours.

Overtime uses the full regular rate before subtracting a permitted tip credit. The employer must cover a weekly tip shortfall within the selected scope. This floor scenario does not calculate pay at a higher agreed rate. Per-workday pay divides the week by the days with hours. Annual figures repeat the rounded weekly result.

Compare 2026 and 2027 at the same schedule
| Scenario without tips or special premiums | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 40-hour week | $640 | $680 |
| 45-hour week | $760 | $807.50 |
| 40 hours repeated for 52 weeks | $33,280 | $35,360 |
The selected date determines the rate. A workweek crossing January 1 needs both rates and a combined overtime calculation; this tool requires all hours to fall within one rate period. Statutory January 2026 and January 2027 increases.
Retail Sunday and holiday hours must be identified
Covered retail employees receive at least time and a half for qualifying Sunday or holiday work. Section 5-23-2 also guarantees at least four hours of employment. This model requires at least four actual hours on each such day; it does not calculate a short-shift guarantee. Pharmacies and establishments principally preparing or selling bakery products have exceptions, so coverage must be confirmed first. §5-23-2(d)–(e).
At $16, a 32-hour week containing eight qualifying Sunday hours pays $576. A 44-hour week containing those eight Sunday hours pays $768. A 50-hour week with eight Sunday hours pays $880: eight premium hours plus two additional overtime hours. Count Sunday hours in the weekly total and in the premium field, but do not count them twice when calculating pay.
Rhode Island excludes those already premium-paid retail hours from its additional weekly overtime calculation. The calculator pays the larger of qualifying retail premium hours and total hours above 40, which implements that rule for this single-rate scenario. §28-12-4.1(b). The retail option is for nontipped work; other Sunday/holiday rules and special agreements need separate review.
Tipped cash stays $3.89 while the credit changes
At the 2026 floor, the maximum hourly credit is $12.11. With the $17 floor in 2027, it is $13.11. The state statute preserves the $3.89 minimum cash requirement; tips must support the credit and the employer must substantiate it. Taxi and certain public-vehicle work cannot use this allowance. §28-12-5 gratuities.
For 40 eligible hours and $300 tips, initial employer cash is $155.60 in either year. The required shortfall is $184.40 in 2026 or $224.40 in 2027, giving $640 or $680 combined gross. At 45 hours and $600 tips in 2026, employer cash is $215.05 and gross is $815.05. The overtime premium uses the full regular rate before the credit. Federal tipped overtime and shortfalls.
Youth and seasonal exceptions need their own coverage review
Some full-time students under 19 at qualifying nonprofits have a 90% rate. Workers aged 14 or 15 can have a 75% rate when working no more than 24 hours; above that threshold, the full floor applies to all hours. Particular seasonal resorts and camps also have exceptions. This calculator is scoped to adult work at the ordinary floor, and does not decide those exceptions. Federal coverage can independently require wages. DLT exception details.
For an ordinary 30-hour schedule over 48 weeks, gross is $23,040 at the 2026 floor or $24,480 at the 2027 floor, before any taxes, deductions or tips. The Massachusetts minimum wage and Connecticut minimum wage next door use different tipped and premium rules; for other New England work, see New Hampshire minimum wage. Sources · Methodology.
