Utah Minimum Wage Calculator

Utah’s ordinary minimum is $7.25 per hour. Eligible tipped cash can be $2.13, but the employer must cover any gap between wages plus tips and the full floor. Utah has no separate overtime law, so federal overtime coverage must be checked independently.

Overtime uses the full regular rate before subtracting a permitted tip credit. The employer must cover a weekly tip shortfall within the selected scope. This floor scenario does not calculate pay at a higher agreed rate. Per-workday pay divides the week by the days with hours. Annual figures repeat the rounded weekly result.

Why the calculator asks about federal coverage

Utah’s act excludes employment entitled to a minimum wage under the FLSA. It has additional exemptions for particular jobs and relationships. A job outside federal coverage therefore does not automatically qualify for the state floor. The state-only option requires the remaining Utah requirements to be confirmed. §34-40-104.

At 44 hours, ordinary federal overtime produces $333.50 at full cash. A confirmed state-only scenario with no overtime obligation produces $319. The difference is four half-rate premiums, totaling $14.50. Employer size alone does not settle federal coverage: individual employees can be covered through their activities. Federal coverage tests.

Enter the tips you actually retain

Utah’s current statute permits credit for tips actually received and protects retention subject to bona fide sharing arrangements. It separately addresses non-tipped employees’ sharing arrangements under federal rules. Do not enter a restaurant’s total customer tips or amounts allocated to someone else. §34-40-104(4), amended in 2023.

Eligible tipped weekEmployer cash before adjustmentShortfallCombined gross
32 hours, $90 retained tips$68.16$73.84$232.00
32 hours, $220 retained tips$68.16$0$288.16
44 hours, $250 tips, federal overtime$108.22$0$358.22

The federal overtime premium starts from $7.25 before subtracting the fixed credit. Service charges, multiple pay rates and bonuses can change this calculation and are excluded. Federal tipped-worker rules.

Employer-initiated separation has a 24-hour payment rule

For employment covered by Utah’s Payment of Wages Act, unpaid wages generally become due within 24 hours after the employer separates the employee. The statute specifies that timely mailing, initiating direct deposit or hand delivery can satisfy the requirement. For a resignation without a written contract for a definite period, the next regular payday applies. Commissioned sales agents needing an account audit have a specific exception. Current §34-28-5.

Check pay statements as well as total gross

The payment statute requires a statement of each deduction. Licensed construction-trades employers have additional statement requirements, including the pay period, hourly rate, hours and amounts withheld. Compare those records with actual work and the promised wage; this minimum-floor tool cannot resolve an unauthorized deduction or replace a higher wage agreement. §34-28-3 pay statements.

Seasonal work needs an actual exemption analysis

The act has a specific seasonal-amusement provision involving operating months or receipts and compensation conditions. A summer schedule or a ski-area location alone is not a coverage determination. This calculator excludes that provision and other special categories. State exemptions.

For ordinary covered work, 32 hours for 40 weeks gives $9,280 at full cash; 40 hours for 52 weeks gives $15,080. Annual outputs repeat one weekly scenario before taxes.
